David Rice Atchison was a US Senator from Missouri. The county is named after him.
The county has a total area of 434 square miles (1,120 km2), of which 431 square miles (1,120 km2) are land and 2.6 square miles (6.7 km2) (0.6%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the fourth-smallest area of any Kansas county.
In honor of Independence Day on July 4, 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition named a river near the city of Atchison “Independence Creek” (see Timeline of the Lewis and Clark Expedition).
