The county is called “Ashland” after Senator Henry Clay’s home near Lexington, Kentucky.It was made up of parts of Huron, Lorain, Richland, and Wayne Counties in 1846.
Ashland County is part of the Ashland, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Mansfield-Ashland-Bucyrus, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 427 square miles (1,110 km2), of which 423 square miles (1,100 km2) are land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) (0.9%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
