It was named after Meskwaki Chief Appanoose, who did not fight Black Hawk because he wanted peace.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 516 square miles (1,340 km2), of which 497 square miles (1,290 km2) are land and 19 square miles (49 km2) are water, or 3.7%.Its main feature is Rathbun Reservoir, which was made by damming the Chariton River.
