The county was established in 1820 and incorporated in 1831.
The county is named after Colonel John Allen, who was killed leading his men during the War of 1812 at the Battle of Frenchtown.
Allen County is part of the Lima metropolitan statistical area, and the population was 102,206 as of the 2020 census.
The county has a total area of 407 square miles (1,050 km2), of which 402 square miles (1,040 km2) is land and 4.4 square miles (11 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
