Alleghany County is a county in the United States.
It is in the far west of the state of Virginia.
It is the northernmost part of the Roanoke Region and is surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains, from which the county gets its name.
Covington is the county seat.
As of the census in 2020, there were 15,223 people living there.
In 1822, the county was made from parts of Bath County, Botetourt County, and Monroe County (which is now in West Virginia). In 1823 and 1844, more parts of Bath County and Monroe County were added.
The county has a total area of 449.7 square miles (1,165 km2), of which 446.572 square miles (1,156.62 km2) are land and 3.152 square miles (8.16 km2) (0.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
