As of the census in 2020, there were 5,699 people living there.
Cherokee is the county seat.
Woods County was split to make Alfalfa County when Kansas became a state in 1907.
The county is named after William H. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, who was the ninth governor of Oklahoma and the head of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention.
He helped make the county out of the much bigger Woods county that was there before.
The county has a total area of 881 square miles (2,280 km2), of which 866 square miles (2,240 km2) are land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (1.7%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
