The county was named after Governor James L. Alcorn.
Alcorn County is included in the Corinth Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Tippah and Tishomingo counties were combined to form Alcorn County in 1870.
The Siege of Corinth, an early campaign in the American Civil War, took place there.
