The population was 34,740 at the time of the 2020 census.Corinth is the county seat.

The county was named after Governor James L. Alcorn.

Alcorn County is included in the Corinth Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Tippah and Tishomingo counties were combined to form Alcorn County in 1870.

The Siege of Corinth, an early campaign in the American Civil War, took place there.

The county has a total area of 401 square miles (1,040 km2), of which 400 square miles (1,000 km2) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) (0.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

It is Mississippi’s smallest county in terms of land area. The county is bisected by the Tuscumbia and Hatchie rivers.
