Its county centre, or shire town, is the town of Middlebury.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 808 square miles (2,090 km2), 766 square miles (1,980 km2) of which are land and 41 square miles (110 km2) of which are water, or 5.1%.
It has the third most land size of any county in Vermont.
