York County (previously Charles River County) is a county in the Tidewater region of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The population was 70,045 according to the 2020 census.
Yorktown, an unincorporated settlement, serves as the county seat.
York County is part of the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is located on the north side of the Virginia Peninsula, with the York River as its northern border.
The county has a total area of 215 square miles (560 km2), of which 105 square miles (270 km2) is land and 110 square miles (280 km2) is water (51.3%).
By land area, it is Virginia’s third-smallest county. It is located near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay.
