The county was established on April 17, 1907, and was incorporated a week later.
It was named after John Quincy Adams (1848-1919), a Milwaukee Road Railroad official and distant relative of sixth U.S. President John Quincy Adams (1767-1848).
The county covers 989 square miles (2,560 km2), of which 988 square miles (2,560 km2) are land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2) (0.1%) are water.
