Adams County was made by the state assembly in 1851.
It was named after either John Adams, the second President of the United States, or his son, John Quincy Adams, who was the sixth President.
On March 12, 1853, the county was finally set up and split from Pottawattamie County.
Its natural size was cut down when Montgomery and Union counties were made.
Quincy, Iowa, was the first county seat. It was moved to Corning in 1872.
The county has a total area of 426 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 423 square miles (1,100 km2) are land and 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
