Dorset is a ceremonial county in the English county of Dorset.
It is bounded to the north-west by Somerset, to the north-east by Wiltshire, to the east by Hampshire, to the south by the English Channel, and to the west by Devon.
Bournemouth is the largest settlement, and Dorchester is the county town.
The county has a population of 772,268 people and an area of 2,653 km2 (1,024 sq mi).
The South East Dorset conurbation, which includes three of the county’s largest settlements: Bournemouth (183,491), Poole (151,500), and Christchurch (31,372), is home to roughly half of the population.
The rest of the county is mostly rural, with the largest towns being Weymouth (53,427) and Dorchester (21,366).
