Leicestershire is an English ceremonial county in the East Midlands.

In the north, it shares borders with Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire.

In the east, it shares borders with Rutland, and in the south, it shares borders with Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and Staffordshire.

The county town and largest settlement is Leicester.

The county is 2,156 km2 (832 sq mi) and has 712,300 people living in it.

Leicester is in the middle of the county and by far the biggest town, with 357,000 people living in its built-up area.

The rest of the county is mostly rural, and the next largest towns are Loughborough (65,000 people), Hinckley (50,000 people), and Coalville (22,000 people).

There are eight local government districts in the county.

Seven of them are part of Leicestershire, a two-tier non-metropolitan county, and the eighth is a unitary area called Leicester.
