Minya Governorate

Minya Governorate, also known as Muḥāfẓet El Minya in Arabic, is one of Upper Egypt’s governorates. Minya, the capital, is located on the Nile’s left bank.

The name comes from the governorate’s principal city, Tmoone in Sahidic Coptic and Thmonē in Bohairic, which means “the residence” and refers to a former monastery in the area.

The name may alternatively be derived from Men’at Khufu, the Egyptian name for the city.
