Haut-Katanga (French for “Upper Katanga”) is one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 21 new provinces established through the 2015 repartitioning.
Haut-Katanga, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Tanganyika provinces resulted from the breakup of the previous Katanga province.
Haut-Katanga was founded by combining the Haut-Katanga district with the cities of Likasi and Lubumbashi, which were independently administered.
Lubumbashi maintains its status as the provincial capital. In 2020, the estimated population was 5,718,800.
The geography of the new province corresponds to the ancient Katanga-Oriental region that existed between 1963 and 1966, shortly after independence.
Haut-Katanga, like Lualaba, is located in Central Africa’s Copperbelt region. The DRC is second only to Chile, Peru, and the People’s Republic of China in terms of global copper production.
