Équateur is one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 21 new provinces created after the 2015 repartitioning.
Équateur, Mongala, Nord-Ubangi, Sud-Ubangi, and Tshuapa provinces resulted from the disintegration of the former Équateur province.
The new province was founded by combining the Équateur district and the separately administered city of Mbandaka, which preserved its status as the provincial capital.
The 2020 population is expected to be 1,856,000.
