Sud-Ubangi

Sud-Ubangi (French for “South Ubangi”) is one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 21 new provinces established by the 2015 repartitioning.

It is located in the northwest of the country beside the Ubangi River.

Sud-Ubangi, Équateur, Mongala, Nord-Ubangi, and Tshuapa provinces resulted from the disintegration of the former Équateur province.

Sud-Ubangi was founded by combining the Sud-Ubangi district with the city of Zongo, which was managed autonomously. Gemena was designated as the new province’s capital.

The 2020 population is expected to be 2,987,100.

The capital of Sud-Ubangi is the town of Gemena. The separately administered city of Zongo was to be capital of the new province.
