Geography
The district lies on the Kalahari’s eastern edge at roughly 27°S 23°E, bordering Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District to the northeast, Frances Baard District to the south and ZF Mgcawu District to the southwest, with an international boundary with Botswana to the northwest. The Ghaap Plateau rises across Ga-Segonyana in the district’s centre, dropping away into red Kalahari dune veld toward Joe Morolong in the west.
Groundwater from dolomite aquifers under the Ghaap Plateau supplies Kuruman’s famous “Eye” spring and much of the district’s farming and mining water, an unusual resource in this otherwise dry part of the country.
Economy and Local Life
Iron-ore and manganese mining around Kathu and Sishen (Gamagara) and manganese mining near Hotazel (Joe Morolong) anchor the district’s economy — the area sits over some of the richest manganese fields in the world. Mining royalties and jobs at Kathu and Sishen make Gamagara the wealthiest of the three local municipalities per capita, even though it is the smallest by population. Cattle and game farming cover much of the rural Kalahari land in Joe Morolong, which is also the largest municipality by area and population. Kuruman, the district seat, carries retail, government and mission-station history dating to the 1800s.
History
The district was known as Kgalagadi District Municipality before being renamed for trade unionist John Taolo Gaetsewe (1916–1988). Kuruman itself grew around a 19th-century London Missionary Society station and a natural spring, “the Eye of Kuruman,” that still supplies the town’s water today.
