Geography
Gamagara shares John Taolo Gaetsewe District with Joe Morolong and Ga-Segonyana. The name comes from a dry riverbed named after Mogara, an early settler of the Makwere clan; the pronunciation shifted from “Gamogara” to “Gamagara” after White farmers settled the area from 1887. The terrain is flat Kalahari bushveld, underlain by extensive iron-ore deposits.
Demographics
Population fell from 41,617 in 2011 to 29,580 in 2022, tracking mining-sector employment cycles as contract workforces have shrunk. Black African residents make up 46.2%, Coloured 33.8% and White 18.8%. Afrikaans is the first language of 53.9%, Tswana of 33.7%. Mayor Henriette du Plessis leads the 15-member council. Kathu holds most of the municipality’s population, with Olifantshoek considerably smaller and Sishen largely a workforce settlement tied directly to the mine.
Economy and Local Life
Iron-ore mining and rail transport dominate the economy. Well-paid mining and rail jobs tied to the iron-ore export line have given Gamagara the highest average taxable income of any South African municipality, around R508,901 per taxpayer as of January 2026. Kathu’s shopping and services sector has grown around this mining wealth, giving it a notably developed retail centre for a town its size, with malls and services more typical of a much larger city. Olifantshoek’s economy leans more on rail operations and surrounding cattle farming than on mining directly.
Getting There
Kathu sits on the N14, about 40 km west of Kuruman and 320 km north-west of Kimberley. The Sishen–Saldanha ore railway line runs through the municipality, one of the longest heavy-haul rail lines in the world.
History
Kathu grew rapidly from the 1970s once large-scale iron-ore mining began at Sishen, transforming what had been a small farming settlement into a planned mining town with wide, tree-lined streets known locally as the “Camel Thorn Forest” for the trees preserved during its layout. Olifantshoek developed earlier as a rail siding and farming town, later linked more closely to Kathu’s economy as mining expanded. Sishen itself remains primarily a mine site rather than a conventional town.
