Leesville is the parish seat. The Sabine River runs along the west side of the parish.
It was founded in 1871, during the time of Reconstruction.
Since World War II, the economy of the parish has been most dependent on Fort Polk.
After the fort opened, the number of people living in the Leesville area grew quickly by five times.

It has the most land area of any parish in Louisiana.
