Carroll County was authorized by the Indiana legislature on January 17, 1828, and organized that April. It is named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Delphi, platted at the confluence of the Wabash and Tippecanoe rivers, became the county seat and grew as a canal town on the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 19th century before the railroad and later highways took over as the county’s main transportation links.
