History
Cass County was organized in 1829 and named for Gen. Lewis Cass, second territorial governor of Michigan and later U.S. Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson. Logansport grew up at the confluence of the Wabash and Eel rivers on land that had been Miami and Potawatomi territory; the Wabash and Erie Canal reached the town in the 1830s, and the county’s rail lines later made Logansport a regional freight junction. The 1838 forced removal of the Potawatomi from northern Indiana, later called the Trail of Death, passed through the Logansport area on its route south to Kansas.
