A Zaria-based hunter travelled to the area with his family in the 17th century to hunt. According to legend, Bwayape (Bwari Hill) meant ‘pound here’ His wife received millet. He told her to pound it here, hence the name. Bwaya became Bwari.
The hunter’s four children went swimming to retrieve a valuable thing from the river. The last of four succeeded. Because of his familial position, his brother Tayebebe was crowned first, then Dadadogunyi. This object is still used in Bwari turbaning.
