Geography
Afadzato South covers the ranges and valleys of the central-northern Volta Region, on the Ghana–Togo frontier hills. Mount Afadja rises to about 885 m above Liati Wote, and the ridges around Liati, Ve and Have carry forest patches and steep farm plots. The district was created in 2012 from the former Hohoe district, which explains the lower 2021 population. It adjoins Hohoe to the north, Ho West to the south and South Dayi to the west.
The border with Togo runs along the ridges to the east, and footpaths cross it between villages that share the same families and languages. Rainfall is high by Ghanaian standards, and the slopes hold remnant forest above the farm plots. The Dayi river drains the northern part of the district towards Lake Volta, and streams off Afadja and the Liati range feed it through the wet season.
Economy and Local Life
Farming is the mainstay: cassava, maize, cocoyam, plantain, cocoa and coffee on the hill soils, with vegetables for the Ho and Hohoe markets. Tourism matters more here than in most districts. Walkers climb Mount Afadja from Liati Wote, and Tafi Atome keeps a community monkey sanctuary, both run with village guides. Kpeve and Golokuati handle much of the trade.
The district was set up as a separate assembly in 2012, so its towns are still building the services a district capital normally carries; Hohoe, half an hour north, remains the reference point for banking and hospital care. Several communities here speak Guan languages alongside Ewe, notably around Liati and Nyagbo. Land is farmed in small terraced plots, and guiding, portering and homestays add income in the tourist villages.
Getting There
Ve Golokwati sits on the Ho–Hohoe road, about 40 km north of Ho and 30 km south of Hohoe. Vehicles running between Ho and Hohoe pass through it all day. Liati Wote and Tafi Atome are reached by branch roads from that route.
