Geography
Hohoe sits in the north of the Volta Region, against the Togo border, among the hills of the Akwapim–Togo ranges. Streams off the escarpment feed the Dayi river, and the Agumatsa stream drops over the Wli falls at the eastern edge of the municipality. Afadzato South was carved out of the former Hohoe district in 2012, which accounts for the lower 2021 census figure. Neighbouring districts include Afadzato South to the south, North Dayi to the west and Kpando to the south-west.
Hohoe town lies at about 200 m, with the escarpment rising east towards the Togo frontier and open farmland to the west and south. The municipality takes in the Lolobi, Likpe and Akpafu traditional areas, whose communities speak Guan languages alongside Ewe. Rainfall is among the highest in the region, and the hills carry forest reserve land above the cocoa and coffee plots.
Economy and Local Life
Hohoe market is the trading hub for the whole northern Volta and runs on a five-day cycle, drawing sellers from the Lolobi, Likpe and Akpafu towns and from across the Togo border. Farms produce cassava, maize, yam, plantain, cocoyam, cocoa and coffee. Visitors to the Wli waterfalls support guesthouses and guides, and the town also serves the district with banks, schools and a hospital.
Hohoe has been a route town since the German colonial period, when the road north through the hills carried trade to the interior, and it kept that role after the 1956 plebiscite brought British Togoland into Ghana. The municipality now anchors education and health services for the northern Volta, with a municipal hospital and several senior high schools drawing students from surrounding districts.
Getting There
Hohoe lies about 70 km north of Ho on the Ho–Jasikan road. Buses run daily from Accra, roughly 230 km away, through Akosombo, Kpeve and Ve Golokwati. Vehicles for Wli and the Lolobi and Likpe towns leave from the Hohoe station.
