Geography
South Dayi lies in the west of the Volta Region, between the Akwapim–Togo ranges and the eastern arm of Lake Volta. Kpeve stands at the junction of the Accra–Ho and Ho–Hohoe roads, and the Peki towns spread along the valley behind it. The lake forms the western edge of the district. It borders North Dayi to the north, Ho West to the east and Afadzato South to the north-east.
Kpeve is a road town first. The junction there splits traffic between Ho to the east and Hohoe to the north, and anything moving between Accra and the northern Volta passes it. West of the junction the land drops to the lake arm formed when the Volta was dammed at Akosombo in the 1960s; the shoreline villages date their present sites to that flooding. The Peki towns sit in a valley behind a low ridge to the south.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and fishing carry the district. Cassava, maize, plantain, cocoyam and vegetables come off the valley farms, and canoe crews fish the lake from the western shore. Kpeve’s position on two trunk roads makes it a collection point for produce heading to Accra, and the roadside stalls there sell to passing traffic. Palm oil milling and small workshops employ the rest.
Population rose from 46,661 to 57,526 between the two censuses, the strongest growth among the lakeside districts, helped by the road junction and by commuting distance to Ho. Peki is a long-established seat of schools and churches, and teaching and public-service work employ a noticeable share of residents. Timber, charcoal and lake fish move through Kpeve on their way to Accra.
Getting There
Kpeve is about 30 km west of Ho and roughly 120 km from Accra by the Accra–Akosombo–Kpeve road. Buses and minibuses between Accra, Ho and Hohoe all pass through the town, so connections are frequent.
