Geography
Ada West sits in the far south-east of the Greater Accra Region, on the Atlantic
coast. The land is flat coastal savanna, broken by lagoons and salt flats; the Songor Lagoon system
reaches into the district and shapes both settlement and work. Villages such as Akplabanya, Anyamam
and Lolonya lie on the shore, while Sege and the Kasseh road settlements sit slightly inland.
To the east lies Ada East,
which holds the Volta River mouth. Shai
Osudoku lies inland to the north-west. Rainfall here is among the lowest in Ghana, and the dry
coastal plain carries scrub and grassland rather than forest.
Economy and Local Life
Salt is the district’s signature product. Lagoon salt winning around the Songor
basin has employed local families for generations, alongside commercial operations on the same flats.
Marine and lagoon fishing supports the shoreline villages, and smoked fish moves inland from them.
Farming on the plain runs to cassava, maize, pepper, okra and shallots, with livestock kept on
open grazing. Sege is the main market and transport point, and traders from Accra buy fish, salt and
vegetables there.
Getting There
The Accra–Aflao trunk road (N1) runs straight through the district and
through Sege, which makes access easy. Sege lies roughly 90 km east of central Accra, about two
hours by road depending on traffic through Tema. Trotros and buses from Accra’s Tudu and Tema
stations run the route all day; the shoreline villages are reached by branch roads south of the
highway.
