Geography
Shai Osudoku occupies the north-eastern corner of Greater Accra, inland from the
coast and reaching towards the Volta. The Shai Hills rise from the Accra plains in the west of the
district, and the surrounding grassland is dry savanna cut by seasonal streams. Dodowa sits at the
foot of the Akuapem range; Afienya, Dawhwenya and Dawa lie south of it on the Tema–Akosombo
corridor.
The district borders the Eastern Region to the north. Within Greater Accra it adjoins
Ada West to the east and the
built-up districts around Tema and
Adenta to the south and
south-west.
Economy and Local Life
Farming carries the district. Maize, cassava, pepper, tomato and mango are the main
crops, and mango orchards on the Shai plains supply Accra’s markets and juice processors. Irrigated
rice is grown around Dawhwenya, and cattle and small ruminants are kept across the open plains.
Dodowa’s market is the trading centre, busiest on market days when produce from the surrounding
villages is bulked for Accra. Dawa, on the southern edge, has been laid out as an industrial area,
and quarrying and sand winning are common near the hills. Charcoal burning and firewood cutting
supply Accra from the drier northern villages.
Getting There
Dodowa lies about 35 km north-east of central Accra. The usual approach is
the Madina–Adenta–Dodowa road, with regular trotros from Madina and Adenta stations
through the day.
From Tema, the Tema–Akosombo road serves Afienya, Dawhwenya and Dawa and connects north to
the Volta crossing at Kpong. Villages off these two roads are reached by feeder roads that turn rough
in the rains.
