Geography
Ada East occupies the south-eastern tip of the Greater Accra Region, where the Volta
River meets the Atlantic. Ada Foah stands on the estuary, with sandbars, creeks and a long spit
separating the river from the sea. Big Ada, Kasseh and Ada Kasseh lie inland along the main road,
while smaller villages line the lagoon margins.
The Songor Lagoon, a large salt-producing wetland, covers much of the district’s western side and
extends into Ada West. Inland to
the north-west lies Shai
Osudoku. The land is flat, dry and treeless, one of the driest coastal stretches in the
country.
Economy and Local Life
Fishing and salt are the mainstays. Canoe crews work both the estuary and the open
sea, and clam picking in the lower Volta is a long-established trade. Salt is won from the Songor
Lagoon and its pans, sold on to traders and processors.
Farming is limited by low rainfall but produces cassava, maize, pepper and vegetables, with onions
and shallots grown on the sandy flats. Ada Foah and Big Ada draw weekend visitors to the estuary
beaches, and the Asafotufiami festival each August brings the Dangme of Ada home in large numbers.
Getting There
Take the Accra–Aflao trunk road (N1) east to Kasseh junction, then turn
south for Ada Foah. The estuary is roughly 110 km from central Accra, about two and a half hours
in normal traffic.
Trotros run from Accra and from Tema to Kasseh, with shared taxis covering the last stretch to Ada
Foah and Big Ada. Boats serve the estuary villages and the sandspit.
