Geography
Sunyani lies in the centre of the Bono Region, in forest-savanna transition country on a plateau of gentle hills. The city is compact and grew as an administrative and trading centre; Atronie and the smaller farming villages ring it. Streams around the municipality drain into the Tano basin. The climate is mild by Ghanaian standards, with two rainy seasons and a short harmattan.
Sunyani West surrounds it to the north and west, Dormaa East lies to the west and Berekum beyond it.
Economy and Local Life
Public administration, education, health services and commerce drive the municipal economy. Sunyani hosts the regional offices of government departments, a teaching hospital and tertiary institutions, and its central market is the busiest in the region. Outside the built-up area, farmers grow maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables and cocoa, and poultry farming is significant.
The student population supports rentals, transport and food vending, and the city is the wholesale point for goods moving on to Berekum, Dormaa Ahenkro and Wenchi. Villages inside the municipality, among them Atronie, Nkwabini and Sawua, supply the central market with vegetables, cassava and plantain.
Getting There
Sunyani is roughly 130 kilometres north-west of Kumasi by road, about three hours, and some 380 kilometres from Accra. Intercity buses serve both cities daily. Sunyani Airport handles domestic flights, and roads radiate to Berekum, Dormaa Ahenkro, Wenchi and Techiman. Techiman, the nearest large market town, is about an hour east. City taxis and shared vehicles link the central market with Atronie and the outlying villages.
