Geography
Sunyani West wraps around the northern and western edges of the regional capital. Growth in the district reflects that position: Abesim, Chiraa and Odumase have absorbed much of Sunyani’s spread. Nsoatre, further west, is the largest of the older towns. The country is forest-savanna transition on rolling ground.
It borders Sunyani to the south-east, Berekum to the west and Wenchi to the north. Rain falls in two seasons, and much of the original forest cover has given way to farm bush and settlement.
Economy and Local Life
The district combines farming with commuter trade. Maize, cassava, plantain, yam, vegetables and cashew are grown, and poultry and pig farming are widespread. Nsoatre and Chiraa hold weekly markets. Proximity to Sunyani means many residents work in the city while living in the district, and roadside trading along the main routes is brisk.
Demand from Sunyani supports market gardening, with tomatoes, pepper and garden eggs grown for daily sale. Building has followed the population growth, and sand winning, block making and carpentry give steady work. Farming villages such as Dumasua, Fiapri and Ayakomaso lie a short drive off the trunk roads.
Getting There
Odumase, Abesim and Chiraa lie on or just off the roads leaving Sunyani towards Wenchi and Berekum, all within 30 minutes of the city. Nsoatre is about 25 kilometres west of Sunyani. Shared taxis run constantly between Sunyani and the district’s main towns. The Sunyani–Wenchi and Sunyani–Berekum roads carry most of the traffic, and journeys from the city rarely take more than 45 minutes.
