Geography
Berekum lies in the west of the Bono Region, on the road between Sunyani and Dormaa Ahenkro. The country is semi-deciduous forest, largely cleared for farming, on gently undulating ground. Berekum town is the commercial centre; Jinijini, Domfete and Fetenta are the other sizeable settlements. Rainfall comes in two seasons and supports both tree crops and twice-yearly food cropping.
Neighbouring districts include Jaman South to the north-west, Dormaa East to the south and Sunyani West to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa, cashew and oil palm are the cash crops; maize, cassava, plantain and vegetables feed households and the market. Berekum town supports a large trading sector, a busy market and a range of schools and health facilities that serve the surrounding villages. Poultry farming, carpentry and transport are common non-farm occupations.
Berekum has long sent workers and students to Kumasi and Accra, and remittances are part of the local economy. Cocoa buying runs through the main season, and cashew has spread on the drier northern farms. Villages such as Domfete, Kato and Senasi sell their produce into the Berekum market.
Getting There
Berekum is about 30 kilometres from Sunyani, roughly 45 minutes by road, and the same route continues west to Dormaa Ahenkro and north to Drobo and Sampa. Minibuses and shared taxis leave Sunyani for Berekum through the day.
