Geography
Amansie Central sits in the south-western corner of the Ashanti Region, in the belt of forest country that runs down towards the Central Region boundary. The land is undulating, broken by steep hills and by the streams that feed the Oda and Offin rivers. Rainfall is heavy and comes in two seasons, which is why the district is cocoa country.
Jacobu, the capital, lies on the road between Bekwai and the Amansie goldfields. Neighbouring districts include Amansie West to the west, Bekwai to the north and Adansi South to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Farming carries the district. Cocoa is the main cash crop, and households also grow plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and oil palm on the same plots. Farm sizes are small and most produce moves to buyers at Jacobu and Bekwai.
Gold is the other pillar. Amansie means gold country, and the district lies on the same reef system worked at Obuasi. Small-scale and artisanal mining employs many young men, alongside sawn timber, petty trade and transport work. Weekly markets in the larger settlements handle foodstuffs, fish brought up from the coast and imported goods.
Asante Twi is the everyday language and the district falls under the Asante traditional area, so the Adae festivals of the 42-day Akan calendar are kept in the chief’s towns. Farming households in Amansie Central rely on the nearest market day for cash, and remittances from relatives working in Kumasi and Obuasi support many homes.
Getting There
Jacobu is reached from Kumasi by way of Bekwai, a run of roughly 60 km on the Kumasi–Obuasi road before turning off. From Accra the usual route is the Accra–Kumasi highway, then south through Bekwai.
Trotros and shared taxis link Jacobu with Bekwai and Kumasi through the day. Feeder roads to the farming villages are earth surfaced and slow going in the rainy season.
