Geography
Amansie West lies in the south-west of the Ashanti Region, on the Offin river which forms much of its western boundary. The district is hilly forest country cut by many streams, and rainfall is heavy in two seasons.
Manso Nkwanta, the capital, sits at a road junction that gives the town its name. Neighbouring districts include Amansie Central to the east, Atwima Mponua to the north and Bekwai to the north-east.
Economy and Local Life
Gold and cocoa define the district. The Offin valley has been worked for gold for centuries, and small-scale and artisanal mining now employs a large share of the workforce. That work has also silted rivers and taken farmland out of use, a running concern for the district assembly.
Farming remains the other mainstay, with cocoa as the cash crop and plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and oil palm grown alongside it. Timber, chainsaw milling, gold buying, transport and market trade round out local employment. Manso Nkwanta and Antoakrom hold the main markets.
Asante Twi is the everyday language and the Manso traditional area holds the chieftaincy. Mining money circulates alongside farm income, which makes trade brisk at Manso Nkwanta and Antoakrom but leaves earnings uneven. Funerals and Adae observances are the main community gatherings.
Getting There
Manso Nkwanta lies about 60 km south-west of Kumasi. The route runs through Abuakwa and Manso Atwere on a road that is tarred for much of the way and rough in places.
Trotros and shared taxis link Manso Nkwanta with Kumasi and Bekwai daily. Mining and farming villages off the main road depend on feeder roads that carry heavy traffic and deteriorate in the rains.
