Geography
Adansi South occupies the southern end of the Ashanti Region, on the boundary with the Central and Eastern regions. The Pra river runs along part of that southern edge. The district is forest country, with ridges, steep valleys and many small streams, and it receives rain in two seasons.
New Edubiase, the capital, sits on the main road running south from Obuasi and Bekwai. Neighbouring districts include Adansi North to the north, Bosome Freho to the north-east and Amansie Central to the west.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the backbone of the local economy, grown alongside plantain, cocoyam, cassava, maize and oil palm. Timber and sawmilling matter too, since much of the district lies in and around forest reserve land.
Adansi is old gold country, and small-scale mining draws labour from farming in parts of the district. New Edubiase is the main market town, with produce buying, transport and retail trade concentrated there. Smaller communities hold their own market days for foodstuffs and household goods.
Asante Twi is spoken throughout, and the district sits within the Adansi traditional area, one of the older Akan states. Adae festivals and funerals are the main public gatherings, and market days at New Edubiase bring the outlying villages together each week.
Getting There
New Edubiase lies roughly 90 km south of Kumasi. The usual route runs through Bekwai and Obuasi, or down the Kumasi–Cape Coast road and east through Fumso.
Trotros and shared taxis link New Edubiase with Obuasi, Bekwai and Kumasi daily. The farm villages are reached on feeder roads, several of which are hard going after heavy rain.
