Geography
Chereponi sits at the eastern edge of the North East Region, on the international boundary with Togo. The country is flat Guinea savanna crossed by seasonal streams draining south towards the Oti River. One rainy season runs from about May to October. The district lies away from the main north–south highways, which keeps it comparatively isolated. It borders Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri to the north-west, with the Saboba area of the Northern Region to the south. East Mamprusi lies further west across the region.
Chereponi town is the only substantial settlement. Everything else on the list is a farming village, typically a cluster of compound houses among the fields. Several sit within walking distance of the Togo border. The population is mixed, with Anufo (Chokosi), Konkomba and Bimoba communities living across the district.
Economy and Local Life
Almost every household farms. Yam, maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, rice, cowpea and cassava are the main crops, and cotton has been grown here on contract. Livestock and guinea fowl are kept in most compounds, and shea gathering brings in dry-season cash. Chereponi town holds the district’s main market, which trades across the Togo border as well as inland. Cross-border movement of grain, livestock and manufactured goods is routine.
The single rainy season gives one main harvest, so dry-season income comes from shea, livestock, petty trade and migration south for work. Yam is the district’s signature crop and moves in quantity to markets further south. Grain and livestock also cross into Togo, where Chereponi traders maintain long-standing links.
Getting There
Chereponi is reached from Yendi by road heading north-east, or from Bunkpurugu to the north. From Tamale the drive runs through Yendi and takes about four hours, longer after rain. Roads into the district are largely unpaved and vehicles are less frequent than on the N10 corridor.
