Geography
Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri lies in the north-east of the North East Region, along the Gambaga escarpment. Nakpanduri sits on the ridge itself, where the ground falls away sharply to the plains below and a seasonal waterfall runs after heavy rain. The wider district is Guinea savanna with one rainy season, roughly May to October. It borders Togo to the east and the Upper East Region to the north, with Chereponi to the south-east and East Mamprusi to the west.
Bunkpurugu and Nakpanduri are the two towns of any size. The rest of the district is dispersed compound settlement, with villages spread thinly across farmland on both the upland and the plain below the escarpment. The area is mainly Bimoba country, with Mamprusi and Konkomba communities alongside.
Economy and Local Life
Farming supports most families: maize, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, cowpea, soya, rice and yam, with vegetables grown in valley bottoms during the dry months. Cattle, small ruminants and guinea fowl are kept throughout the district. Shea picking and processing is a significant women’s activity. Bunkpurugu and Nakpanduri hold the main markets, and trade crosses the Togo border regularly. The escarpment at Nakpanduri attracts occasional visitors.
Income is seasonal, resting on one harvest, and young people commonly travel south for work between harvests. Yam and groundnut are the main cash crops. The district has seen periods of communal conflict over land and chieftaincy in past decades, which held back investment. Farming and small trade remain the mainstay.
Getting There
Bunkpurugu is reached from Nalerigu and Gambaga by road heading east, or from Walewale on the N10 via Nalerigu. Allow about four hours from Tamale. The roads are mostly unpaved beyond Nalerigu and slow in the rainy season; shared vehicles run on market days.
