Geography
East Mamprusi lies in the east of the North East Region, on and below the Gambaga escarpment. That long ridge drops away to the plains and is the district’s most recognisable feature. The country is Guinea savanna: grassland, scattered shea and dawadawa trees, and seasonal streams draining towards the White Volta. Rain falls in a single season, roughly May to October. It borders West Mamprusi to the west, Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri to the east, and the Upper East Region to the north.
Gambaga and Nalerigu sit only a few kilometres apart on the escarpment and function almost as twin towns. Below the ridge the land opens out into farmland dotted with compound settlements. The villages listed below are mostly small farming communities reached by earth roads. Vegetation thins noticeably towards the north of the district.
Economy and Local Life
Households farm maize, millet, sorghum, rice, groundnuts, cowpea, soya and yam, and most keep livestock or guinea fowl. Shea and dawadawa gathering supplements incomes in the dry season, and vegetable growing along streams continues after the rains end. Gambaga and Nalerigu both hold markets that draw farmers from the surrounding villages. Nalerigu carries additional weight as the regional capital and as the site of a long-established mission hospital that serves patients from across the north.
The farming year turns on a single harvest, so dry-season income depends on shea, livestock sales, petty trade and seasonal migration south for work. Small dams and stream-side plots support dry-season onions, tomatoes and leafy vegetables. Nalerigu’s hospital, schools and government offices make the town an employer in their own right.
Getting There
Nalerigu is about 40 km east of Walewale by road, off the N10. Coming from Tamale, drive north to Walewale and turn east through Gambaga; the trip takes roughly three hours. Shared taxis and trotros run the Walewale–Gambaga–Nalerigu road daily.
