Geography
Kpando lies on the lake shore in the north-west of the Volta Region. The land rises from the water to a ridge behind the town, and the flooded Volta valley forms the western boundary. Kpando Torkor, the lake landing a few kilometres from the town centre, is one of the busiest fishing and ferry points on this side of the lake. The municipality adjoins North Dayi to the south and Hohoe and Afadzato South to the east.
Torkor’s landing sits at the head of the lake’s eastern arm, and cargo boats and passenger craft work north from it towards Yeji and the ports on the upper lake. The flooding that created Lake Volta in the 1960s reshaped the municipality, taking farmland along the old river and leaving the present shoreline. Behind the ridge the land is farmed in small plots to the boundary with the hill districts east.
Economy and Local Life
Fishing on Lake Volta is the leading trade, and the Torkor landing sends smoked fish to markets across southern Ghana. Farming follows, with cassava, maize, yam, plantain and vegetables. Kpando has a long-standing pottery and ceramics trade worked from local clay, and the town market serves the lakeside villages and the districts inland.

Kpando keeps a strong church presence, with mission schools and a hospital that serve well beyond the municipal boundary. Getting There
Kpando is about 60 km north of Ho and roughly 40 km south of Hohoe, on the road that follows the lake shore. From Accra, drive through Akosombo and Kpeve, then north; the trip runs about 190 km. Boats from Torkor cross the lake to the western shore.
