Geography
Bekwai lies south of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, in the moist semi-deciduous forest zone that runs down towards the Pra and Offin rivers. The land is gently rolling, well watered and heavily farmed, with forest reserve patches between the villages. Bekwai town is the seat of the Amansie traditional area and the district’s commercial centre. The municipality borders Bosomtwe to the north, Amansie West to the west, Adansi North to the south and Bosome Freho to the east.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the leading cash crop, supported by oil palm, citrus and plantain, and by cassava, cocoyam and maize for the home and the market. Small-scale gold working occurs along the river valleys towards Amansie. Bekwai’s market is the weekly draw for the surrounding villages, and the town carries the banks, senior high schools and hospital that serve the wider area. Carpentry, transport and food trading make up most of the non-farm work.
Asante Twi is the language of daily life and Bekwai is a paramount seat within the Asante state, so chieftaincy affairs and the Akwasidae festival cycle matter locally. The town has a long-standing hospital and some of the better-known senior high schools in southern Ashanti, which draw boarding students from beyond the municipality. Sunday church attendance and weekly market day organise the week in most villages.
Getting There
Bekwai is about 35 km south of Kumasi on the main Kumasi–Obuasi road, a drive of under an hour in normal traffic. Trotros leave Kumasi throughout the day, and the same road continues south to Obuasi and Dunkwa. Village roads off the highway are laterite and need a sturdy vehicle in the wet season.
