Geography
Bosomtwe takes its name from Lake Bosomtwe, the crater lake that fills a meteorite impact basin about 30 km south-east of Kumasi. The lake is Ghana’s only natural lake of any size and has no river outlet. Steep wooded slopes ring the water, and the villages sit on the shoreline and on the rim above it.
Kuntanase, the capital, stands on the western approach to the lake. Neighbouring districts include Atwima Kwanwoma to the west, Bekwai to the south and Ejisu-Juaben to the north.
Economy and Local Life
Farming and fishing share the district. On the slopes and the plateau farmers grow cocoa, plantain, cassava, cocoyam, maize and vegetables, much of it sold into Kumasi. Lakeside communities fish the crater lake from traditional padua planks, and the catch is smoked and sold locally.
Tourism adds income. The lake draws weekend visitors from Kumasi and beyond, so guesthouses, boat operators and food sellers work the shoreline villages at Abono and nearby. Being close to Kumasi, the district also holds a growing commuter population, and building work, stone quarrying and transport give steady employment.
Lake Bosomtwe is a sacred lake in Asante tradition, and the lakeside communities keep customs tied to it, including days on which fishing is not done. Asante Twi is the everyday language. Weekend visitors from Kumasi make the shoreline villages busier than their size suggests.
Getting There
Kuntanase is about 30 km from Kumasi. The usual route runs south-east through Atonsu and Kuntanase to the lake shore at Abono, a drive of under an hour on tarred road.
Trotros and shared taxis run frequently from Kumasi’s Asafo and Atonsu stations. The lakeside villages are linked by narrow roads around the crater rim, several of them steep and unsurfaced.
