Geography
Biakoye lies in the south of the Oti Region, between the Volta Lake and the forested hills that run along the Ghana-Togo highlands. Tapa Abotoase stands on the lake shore and works as the district’s water gateway. Worawora, the largest town, sits inland and hosts the district hospital. Biakoye borders Jasikan to the north and Krachi East across the lake, with the Volta Region beginning to the south.
Rainfall is heavier here than in the north of the region, and two wet seasons are normal, which is why cocoa and oil palm do well. Streams run off the hills into the Volta year round. Settlement follows the roads and the lake shore, with farm hamlets spread between the larger towns.
Economy and Local Life
Biakoye is farming country. Cocoa, oil palm, cassava, maize, plantain and cocoyam are the standard crops, and teak plantations occupy part of the hill slopes. Lakeside households fish and smoke tilapia and mudfish for market. Worawora, Apesokubi and Nkonya Ahenkro hold the busiest markets, where produce is bulked for buyers coming up from Ho and Accra. Nkonya and Ewe are widely spoken.
Worawora’s hospital and the secondary schools in the district draw people from a wide catchment. The assembly, based at Nkonya Ahenkro, handles feeder roads, sanitation and school infrastructure. Cocoa money arrives with the main crop late in the year and lifts trade in every market town. Palm oil pressing, gari processing and small-scale timber work employ many households between harvests.
Getting There
The district is on the road that runs north from Hohoe through Worawora towards Jasikan and Kadjebi. From Accra the usual route is through Ho and Hohoe, a full day’s travel. Passenger boats connect Tapa Abotoase with lakeside landings on the far shore.
