Geography
Krachi East lies on the eastern shore of the Volta Lake, in the west of the Oti Region. Dambai stands at the lake crossing, and the ferry to Kete Krachi is the shortest link to the western bank. Away from the shoreline the country is flat guinea savanna with scattered farm bush. The municipality borders Krachi Nchumuru and, across the water, Krachi West.
Rain falls in one season, roughly April to October, and the dry months bring harmattan haze off the north. The lake edge shifts with the water level, exposing flats that are farmed in the dry season. Dambai has grown quickly since the Oti Region was created, adding offices, housing and services around the old ferry town.
Economy and Local Life
Fishing on the Volta Lake and farming share the local economy. Yam, cassava, maize, groundnut and rice are the common crops, and smoked fish from the lake is traded inland. Dambai’s market is the busiest in the area, and its role as the seat of regional administration has added public-sector jobs, schools and a college of education. Boat operators at the crossing carry passengers, produce and vehicles daily.
Regional administration is now a large part of Dambai’s economy, alongside the market and the crossing. Yam, maize and groundnut come in from the surrounding villages, and fish is smoked at the landings before travelling south. Dry-season vegetable growing on the drawdown flats gives families income outside the main farming calendar. Trading and transport work follow the ferry timetable.
Getting There
Dambai is reached by road from Hohoe through Jasikan and Nkwanta, or from the west by the lake ferry from Kete Krachi. Traffic from Kumasi normally comes through Atebubu and the Volta crossing. District roads are gravel and can be hard going in the wet season.
