Geography
Jasikan lies in the south-east of the Oti Region, on the western slopes of the Ghana-Togo ranges. The terrain is hilly and well watered, with forest patches surviving on the higher ground and streams draining west towards the Volta. The Togo border runs a short distance to the east. Jasikan borders Kadjebi to the north and Biakoye to the south-west.
Elevation gives the district a cooler, wetter climate than the Volta basin to the west. Two rainy seasons support tree crops, and the higher slopes keep patches of semi-deciduous forest. Settlements string along the trunk road and the valleys, with farm hamlets on the ridges above them.
Economy and Local Life
Cocoa is the backbone crop, grown alongside coffee, oil palm, cassava, plantain, cocoyam and maize. Smallholders dominate, and cocoa purchasing clerks operate in most of the larger settlements. Jasikan town is the commercial centre and holds the district market; it also serves the surrounding villages with schools, a hospital and a college of education. Teteman, Okadjakrom and Baglo are other collecting points for farm produce. Likpe and Ewe are commonly spoken.
Jasikan is the district’s service centre and the assembly seat. Weekly markets bring in traders from the surrounding villages and from across the Togo border. Cocoa purchasing sets the rhythm of the year: money circulates from the main crop late in the year, and food crops carry households through the lean months. Gari and palm oil processing are common in the smaller settlements. Teak and other timber plantations give seasonal work on the slopes above the town, and young people leave for Accra and Kumasi when farm work is slack.
Getting There
Jasikan sits on the trunk road that runs north from Hohoe through Kadjebi towards Nkwanta. From Accra, travellers take the Ho-Hohoe route and continue north. Roads within the district are mostly gravel and slow after heavy rain.
