Luxor Governorate (Arabic: محافظة الأقصر) has been one of Egypt’s governorates since December 7, 2009, when former President Hosni Mubarak proclaimed its independence from Qena Governorate.
It is approximately 635 km south of Cairo. It is located in Upper Egypt, near the Nile. Luxor is the capital of the Luxor governorate; other notable cities and tourist destinations include Esna and Armant.
