Towns and Localities Today
Shepparton, the county’s largest town, is the seat of Greater Shepparton City. Cobram and Yarrawonga, both on the Murray River, and Numurkah are Moira Shire’s main towns. Euroa and Avenel, in the county’s south, sit within Strathbogie Shire.
Geography
Moira lies east of the Goulburn River, south of the Murray, and west of part of the Ovens River. Its eastern end takes in part of Wangaratta. It borders Rodney to the west, Bogong, Dalhousie and Delatite to the south. Cadell, Townsend and Denison counties lie across the Murray in New South Wales.
History
Moira was proclaimed a county on 24 February 1871. Its name is shared with the modern Moira Shire, which covers much of the county’s central and northern parishes.
