Geography
Thabo Mofutsanyana runs along the Free State’s eastern mountain edge, from the Vaal Dam catchment in the north to the Lesotho border in the south, with the Maluti mountains and Golden Gate Highlands National Park along its eastern rim. It is the province’s most mountainous and highest-rainfall district, named for Thabo Mofutsanyana, an anti-apartheid trade unionist and Communist Party leader born in the area.
Demographics
Population grew from 735,678 in the 2011 census to 831,420 in 2022, a rise of about 13%. Maluti-a-Phofung alone holds close to half the district’s people, with Sesotho the leading home language across all six municipalities.
Economy and Local Life
Farming underpins most of the district’s economy — maize and sunflower on the flatter western side, cherries around Ficksburg, dairy near Memel and Warden, and livestock throughout. Harrismith adds logistics on the N3 corridor, benefiting from its position midway between Johannesburg and Durban, and Clarens has built a tourism economy around Golden Gate Highlands National Park and its sandstone scenery. Maluti-a-Phofung’s textile and furniture factories once employed over 250,000 people before 1994; government and retail jobs have since become the larger employers there.
History
The district’s towns developed at different times and for different reasons: Bethlehem and Ficksburg as 19th-century Boer Republic market towns, Harrismith as a wagon-route stop into Natal named for Cape governor Sir Harry Smith, and Phuthaditjhaba much later as the apartheid-era capital of the QwaQwa homeland, a self-governing area for Sesotho speakers declared in 1974 and reincorporated into South Africa in 1994. That mixed history still shows in the district today — commercial farming towns on one side, a dense former-homeland urban area on the other.
