Alfred Nzo District sits in mountainous country along the Drakensberg escarpment, bordering Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. Terrain ranges from Matatiele’s high grassland near Lesotho, above 3,000 metres in places, down through the rolling hills around Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff, to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s lower Mtamvuna valley near the coast. The Mzimvubu River system drains most of the district on its way toward Port St Johns on the Wild Coast, further south in neighbouring OR Tambo District.

Alfred Nzo District was created in 2000, drawing together four local municipalities that had previously been split between the Transkei-era East Griqualand region and the old OR Tambo administrative area. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Ntabankulu were both later transferred here from OR Tambo District after the 2011 municipal election, and Matatiele followed a still more complicated path — moved between Cape, Natal, KwaZulu-Natal and finally the Eastern Cape by 2006. The district is named after Alfred Baphethuxolo Nzo, who served as ANC secretary-general during the liberation struggle and later as South Africa’s foreign affairs minister under Nelson Mandela.
