The population was 133,157 at the time of the 2020 census.
Amite City is the parish seat, and Hammond is the largest city.
Hammond is the home of Southeastern Louisiana University.
Lake Pontchartrain runs along the parish’s southeastern border.
Tangipahoa is derived from an Acolapissa word that means “ear of corn” or “those who gather corn.” During the Reconstruction period, the parish was established in 1869.
Tangipahoa Parish is part of the Hammond, LA MSA, which is also part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Hammond, LA-MS Combined Statistical Area.
It is one of the Florida Parishes and was once a part of West Florida.
The parish has a total area of 823 square miles (2,130 km2), of which 791 square miles (2,050 km2) is land and 32 square miles (83 km2) (3.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Lake Pontchartrain is located on the parish’s southeast corner.
