St. Tammany Parish is a parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana.
It is named after Tamanend, the legendary Lenape Chief of Chiefs who is also known as the “Patron Saint of America.”
At the time of the 2020 census, there were 264,570 people living there.
This made it the fourth most populous parish in Louisiana.
Covington is the parish seat.
In 1810, the parish was set up.
The New Orleans–Metairie metropolitan statistical area includes St. Tammany Parish.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the parish covers 1,124 square miles (2,910 km2), of which 846 square miles (2,190 km2) are land and 279 square miles (720 km2) are water, or 25%.
It is near Lake Pontchartrain, to the north.
